A Ketotarian walks into a pizza joint….. Ha! Sounds like the start to a bad joke! That’s exactly how I felt recently when I attended a travel Meetup group who where meeting at this well known and delicious pizza joint in Portland, Oregon. I kept thinking; okay there’s gotta be a punch line here somewhere!

Even before arriving I’d come up with a strategy for making good decisions when ordering. It was to not get in line but to stand well back from the counter, slowly go over all options, come up with a couple choices that would work and then go to the restroom! Yup! I’ve decided I will always go to the restroom before ordering. And that’s wether I need to go or not! By braking up that flow of decision making I find I make better choices and ultimately I’m happier with my meal and have a better experience.

This evening I chose their Italian Chopped Salad and really didn’t have to do much in the way of substitutes. First I made sure to ask if their Italian dressing had any sugar in it, nope. Then I asked them to hold the chickpeas and instead add chopped hazelnuts. It was that easy. I was super happy with the salad! Not so happy with drink choices however! I can’t have alcohol, sugar, artificial colors, artificial flavors or tap water, etc. There wasn’t a bottled water or a mineral water in sight! Note to self; either hydrate well before going out or BYOB (bring your own beverage) ?
